4/17/12 Journal

I didn't do a blog on Monday because of the program auditions.  I finished reading "A Streetcar Named Desire" over the weekend. From where I left off, I was in the middle of Scene 4, during Blanche's speech about how Stanley's behavior can be compared to an animal. She also says there is even something about him that would make her think he came right out of the stone age. Blanche shares her concern for her sister's well being with Mitch, but instead of giving her much advice, she admits that he likes her and wants to marry her. In Scene 7, Stanley tells Stella that he thinks she is lying to them about a number of things, including her past with men, which she had also lied to Stanley about. She had plenty of dates with men while staying at the hotel Flamingo, but they would stop seeing her after a few dates. Once Mitch found out about this, he decided that although he still wanted to be with her, he does not want to marry her. After this happens, Blanche is in her room, and Stanley comes in drunk, and begins to talk to her. At the end of Scene 10, he rapes her. In Scene 11, Blanche spends most of her time in the bath, but when she does have an encounter with the poker players, which is very uncomfortable. Blanche ends up leaving with the doctor, which leaves Stella devastated by the fact that she ruined her sister. The play ends with Stanley trying to comfort her/
